Kogi State Polytechnic Closed Indefinitely

Kogi State Polytechnic in Lokoja has been closed indefinitely.
This was dislosed to the press by the school’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Luke Yakubu Tuesday in Lokoja.
He said that the closure was to prevent loss of lives and property. He also directed all students, including those in hostels to vacate the school premises immediately.
Yakubu said management had no option than to take the action following violent protest embarked upon by the students earlier in the day to against the killing of their female colleague.
The female colleague was allegedly stabbed on the chest during a scuffle with a commercial motorcycle operator over N50 transport fare.
She died on Tuesday morning at the hospital where she was receiving treatment, a development which prompted the students to embark on protest.
As the situation degenerated, the protesting students used a truck carrying cement products to block the Lokoja-Abuja highway.
According to eyewitnesses, the students later set the truck and two other vehicles and many motorcycles ablaze, a development which completely halted vehicular movement on the road for hours.
Many motorists had to abandon their vehicles to seek refuge in nearby houses and shops as police engaged the protesters.
Kogi state Police Spokesman, ASP William Aya, told pressmen that the situation had been brought under control.
He also said that no arrest has been made as the police was there to calm and persuade the students to leave the highway.

UNILAG Students win court case against management

The new rules saw the school placing the students into departments other than the one they studied in during their first year.

UNILAG

University of Lagos

Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the University of Lagos to reinstate its students into the College of Medicine after a previous directive by school management caused them to be disqualified from their chosen course of study.
Premiumtimes reports that UNILAG has been ordered to maintain the status quo before the dispute pending the resolution of the matter.
The students, who appeared in court, were very glad with this ruling.
For the students, as you can see, today is a happy day for them, we believe tomorrow will be better. We thank the court,” said Jiti Ogunye, counsel to the students.
We came to this court by way of judicial review, motion ex-parte, to seek leave and to ask the court to permit the leave to operate as a stay of all actions of the respondents against the students, essentially to enable them continue their academic programmes pending the resolution of this case.”
The undergraduates from the Faculty of Medicine reportedly sued the varsity after the management arbitrarily reviewed, upwards, the academic requirements into the College of Medicine.
The university had blocked some of its 2014/2015 medical ‎students from proceeding to the College of Medicine after introducing new academic qualifications in the middle of the school’s academic calendar.
The new rules saw the school placing the students into departments other than the one they studied in during their first year.
For instance, a student who was admitted to study Nursing saw herself reposted to Radiography, while another who was in Medicine and Surgery was moved to Fisheries.

Why it is crucial to never stop learning

Sure, we choose to get educated simply because it is expect of us, but not many of us truly understand the impact and importance of education, for ourselves and for our society.

As an academic, you do not only get the formal aspect of learning, what you study goes a long way into shaping who you are.

Human beings are born with some skills, sure, but most are the normal animalistic skills to help us find food, mate and protect ourselves.

It is our awareness of who we are and our education in the course of our years that sets us apart from other animals. Education helps us understand what to do and why we do it. We can differentiate right from wrong and we can make choices, hopefully, good ones that will help us become useful to our society.

Importance of education

1. Education instills self confidence

You feel more confident in yourself when you are knowledgeable. You will not be knowledgeable if you are uneducated. Education helps you learn more about yourself, your immediate society and the world at large. You need confidence and self-belief to be able to achieve anything in life. This can only be done if you are educated. Knowing how to read and understand language will make you more aware of the world. Being able to form useful opinions and contribution when others are speaking, because you are educated, well help you feel confident.

2. Helps you find your gift

We are all born with some talent, and you are unlikely to find this talent if you are not educated. How do you know what is within you if you have no idea that such things exist. For instance, you could have been instilled with the gift of writing, but if you have never been educated or gone to school, you will have no way to hone this skill, build on it, and be the best you can be.

3. Gives you a future

You go to school to get educated. You get educated to get employed. No one will employ an uneducated person. So, this proves that education is the first step towards building a life for yourself. It is the most important step when it comes to building a future.

4. Helps you become aware

Another importance of education is that it makes you aware. You know what is around you. You do not blindly follow other people's views because education has furnished you with the ability to make your own. You consider logic, culture and beliefs before choosing what way you think is right. Education clears darkness and leaves you with light and clarity.

5. Aids progression

Imagine a group of well educated persons coming together to build a nation. Education makes you understand what the nation needs, figure out the right ways to get it, and bring about solutions to problems. The importance of education can never be over emphasized. It is the only way to fulfil your purpose and better your society.
